Is there a difference between vaginal rejuvenation and perineoplasty surgery?

Terminology can become confusing when it comes to vaginal reconstructive surgeries. Often several of the procedure names are used interchangeably, sometimes incorrectly. For example, a mid-urethral sling is a procedure done to treat stress urinary incontinence (leakage with coughing, sneezing or exercise). Many women have come to believe that this procedure is also a bladder lift (correction of a cystocele) due to how the name of the procedure has been used over the years. A mid-urethral sling does not lift the bladder; it gives support under the urethra to treat stress incontinence. Vaginal rejuvenation similarly is often used to describe a variety of vaginal reconstructive surgeries. Vaginal rejuvenation is a surgery done to restore the inner caliber of the vagina (vaginoplasty) as well as to tighten the opening of the vagina (perineoplasty). This surgery is done to treat vaginal looseness and decreased sensation with intercourse occurring secondary to vaginal relaxation. Vaginal looseness or relaxation is common after multiple vaginal deliveries and in women with pelvic organ prolapse or rectocele. Vaginal rejuvenation surgery is done in an operating room setting under anesthesia. Perineoplasty is a surgery done to restore the outer part of the vagina only. During perineoplasty, the opening of the vagina is tightened and the perineal body (the area between the vagina and the rectum) is rebuilt. This surgery restores the appearance of the vagina, similar to how it looked before delivery. Perineoplasty is also done in the OR under anesthesia. Both surgeries are usually billed through one’s insurance so cost is dependent on your insurance plan and deductible. If pelvic organ prolapse is also present, a formal prolapse repair should be performed in conjunction with vaginal rejuvenation or perineoplasty. The treatment based on each individual patient’s history, her desired outcome and a physical exam.
