For labiaplasty procedures, most women want the labia minora to be trimmed to the shortest possible point, leaving very minimal remaining labial skin. Often this also includes removal of the clitoral prepuce (or clitoral hood) and excess skin at the posterior fourchette (the bottom area of the vagina that extends from the left to the right labia minora). The result is a smooth, imperceptible appearance of the labia when wearing tight clothing, which is why labiaplasty has earned the nickname “Barbie vagina” in popular culture (it has also been called a “designer vagina”).

Vaginal rejuvenation is a surgery done to restore the inner caliber of the vagina (vaginoplasty) as well as to tighten the opening of the vagina (perineoplasty). This surgery is done to treat vaginal looseness and decreased sensation with intercourse occurring secondary to vaginal relaxation. Vaginal looseness or relaxation is common after multiple vaginal deliveries and in women with pelvic organ prolapse or rectocele.

The vagina stretches over time due a variety of factors like age, childbirth and genetics. As a result, women might notice a change in the way their vagina looks and feels. This loosening can also lead some women to experience undesirable symptoms, specifically decreased sensation during intercourse. Other women have found that changes to their vagina cause dryness or incontinence.

Fortunately there are plenty of options out there, from lasers to surgery, that can help repair your vaginal anatomy. Because everyone will have different symptoms and needs, vaginal rejuvenation treatment plans vary from patient to patient. If you’re someone who has more mild symptoms, you might do best with ThermiVa vaginal rejuvenation. This helps address symptoms like vaginal dryness, although it does require regular maintenance. If you’re someone who has more noticable signs and symptoms, we typically recommend surgical vaginal rejuvenation. Seeing as vaginal looseness is indicative of vaginal prolapse, a formal prolapse repair might be conducted during surgery as well.

Vaginoplasty or surgical vaginal rejuvenation offers long-lasting results. In a nutshell, vaginoplasty allows us to tighten the vagina by reducing the size of the vaginal opening and removing loose tissue. Surgery is performed in a hospital or surgery center and typically takes around 2 hours. Afterwards patients are asked to take at least two weeks off from work to recover, while waiting six weeks to have sex so that the vaginal tissue can heal. Any stitches will dissolve on their own, usually within 5-6 weeks. We also offer pain medication to mitigate any discomfort you might experience.

ThermiVa is a non-surgical procedure that utilizes radio-frequency technology to tighten the labia and vagina. Strengthening vaginal tissue improves sexual function, meaning better and more frequent orgasms. It also may help with mild incontinence as well as vaginal dryness, restoring vaginal moisture inside the vagina.

While ThermiVa has a host of benefits, it’s not necessarily the best option for patients that are experiencing moderate or severe vaginal laxity and/or pelvic organ prolapse. It’s also worth noting that it requires more long-term maintenance than vaginoplasty, meaning you’ll generally need to repeat the procedure as the effects start to wane.

Vaginoplasty is a surgical approach to vaginal rejuvenation. While it’s more invasive than ThermiVa, the results are permanent and require less upkeep. It’s also a better option for patients that are experiencing extreme vaginal laxity, and it can be performed alongside a formal prolapse repair if necessary. If you’re curious about what to expect, we have vaginoplasty “before and after” photos from previous patients.

While surgery might sound more intimidating, vaginoplasty is a fairly straightforward procedure. During vaginoplasty, Dr. Shashoua surgically reconstructs vagina by using suture to tighten the muscle and vaginal canal. The surgery typically takes about two hours, with most patients requiring an overnight stay at the hospital. It takes six weeks to fully heal, during which time you’ll want to avoid sexual intercourse or any activity that might strain the vaginal tissue.

For vaginal rejuvenation surgery, the before and after pictures reflect a tightening or narrowing of the vaginal opening. Typically, at the time of consult, we take a before. We review this picture with the patient at the time of her initial visit to discuss what skin will be removed and her exact desired outcome.

We ask all of our patients to allow us to post their before and after pictures following labiaplasty or vaginal rejuvenation. These pictures are anonymous, containing only the date of the surgery, the date the after picture was taken and the patient’s initials. Photos may also include an age range of the patient. If patients choose to have their before and after pictures posted, they will sign a consent for this prior to their surgery. If she prefers not to have her pictures posted, we will use the images only for her counseling within our office.

The benefit of posting these pictures is that this allows women who are considering a vaginal surgery to see outcomes from patients who have had surgery with Dr. Shashoua. The final pictures are typically taken 6 weeks after surgery, once the majority of healing has taken place. For labiaplasty surgery, the skin will often to continue to flatten out for a more natural appearance over the next several months. You can watch a video explainer by clicking the image below.
